Kate Middleton’s style evolution: A year as Princess of Wales

In her first full year as the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton has undergone a remarkable style evolution while marking her 42nd birthday on January 9.

As she stepped into her senior role alongside Prince William, the royal fashion expert, Christine Ross, observed a streamlined and vintage-inspired transformation in Kate’s wardrobe.

Over the past 12 months, Kate has not only increased her royal engagements but also played a significant role in high-profile ceremonies, including the coronation of her father-in-law, King Charles III. Charles, upon ascending to the throne in September 2022, appointed Prince William and Kate as the new Prince and Princess of Wales, emphasizing their role in inspiring and leading national conversations. 

Since January 2023, Kate has settled into her new role, launching the “Shaping Us” early years awareness campaign, taking on military patronages, and increasing her presence in Wales. Alongside her professional growth, her style has undergone a notable evolution. 

According to Christine Ross, Kate’s style has embraced boldly-hued trouser suits, particularly when the Princess means business. For formal events, there’s a vintage-inspired tone, adding a timeless quality to her looks. Notably, Kate’s pantsuits, a staple of her working wardrobe, have been showcased in various colorways from designers like Alexander McQueen. 

The princess’s ability to seamlessly blend vintage-inspired looks with more statement outfits for important occasions, such as Garter Day at Windsor Castle or Royal Ascot, reflects a continuity that Ross believes creates timeless photo moments. Despite her vintage-inspired choices, Kate’s wardrobe doesn’t confine her to a time-warp. Whether engaging with the Scouts or volunteering at a baby bank, she maintains her classic countryside style with skinny jeans, practical boots, and cozy jumpers. 

As Kate enters a new year, anticipation is building for another collection of important engagements, with speculations of foreign travel and the usual showcase events like Trooping the Colour capturing the interest of royal fans.
